Laurence King Publishing

Lawrence King Publishing are one of the world’s leading publishers of books on the creative arts – their contribution to thought and practice is undeniable.

So far we’ve designed two books for them: Window Display: New Visual Merchandising by Tony Morgan and New Packaging Design by Janice Kirkpatrick.

Foreword
Recalling the display of consumer goods in
retail environments, the front and back covers ofNew Packaging Design reference the grid-based layout within.

The 3D render of stacked boxes, embossed with spot varnish, gracefully reflects the projected title.

Chapters and sections
A strong modernist aesthetic underpins New Packaging Design – the heavily formalised typographic treatment anchors a huge diversity
of photos.

To allow 30 percent more copy space for the translation of foreign language editions, a crafts-based approach formed the basis of our design.

Window Display relies on sparse text and large fashion-inspired imagery to evoke feelings of movement. The right page full-bleeds help propel the reader, subtly recreating the sensation of walking and window-shopping.

Afterword
Our role in both projects was somewhat non-conceptual – each book is constructed around strict layouts that involved a markedly technical approach to design.

Besides the pronounced graphic sensitivity indicative of our craft, past experience in photography, interior design and 3D-modeling allowed us to pull this off. This diverse skill set informs everything we do.

“…the most modest packs often have the greatest and strangest stories to tell.” – Janice Kirkpatrick
